When it comes to technology, it is no secret that companies are constantly searching for the next innovative piece of hardware or software that will revolutionize society. However, can rapid advances in technology ever be a bad thing? Take for example news stations and social media. There have been many instances when a news story is reported through an outlet such as Twitter or Facebook, only to later retract their reporting once more details emerge. This ofter leads to false initial reporting, or even worse, reporting of information that should not have been exposed. On the other hand, the quick delivery of information has its benefits as well, such as warning those in harms way when dealing with severe weather.
So what's the overall consensus. Is rapid advances in technology good or bad?
I love being so connected and getting information rapidly. For example, in my work it helps me to use social media to get instant notifications about world events that might affect my students. But I do worry that incorrect information can spread just as quickly. I think an important thing that can (and must) come along with it is our increased skepticism about the source of information. We are starting to grow more wary of "stuff you read on the internet" but we must learn to ALL be critical consumers of content.
